Thesaurus of Geographic Names Worldwide Thesaurus from the Getty Information Institute. In Italy On Line A commercial site but outstanding. Broad coverage, sections on travel, books, bazaars, etc. particularly strong in providing coverage of diverse regions of Italy. Written by experts who love Italy and Rome. See especially Latium and Rome. A short wait required on most links due to art work, pictures and maps. Worth the wait. Let's Roam Italy. A Cybertrip to the home of Julius Ceaser, and Leonardo DaVinci. Non profit general site directed towards students. Includes useful find an e-mail pal who can tell you all about the country and "la dolce vita" that is life in Italy. Very interesting. Greece. Detailed maps of modern Greece from commercial site, Getting Around the Planet. Interesting.

SMU Excavations at Poggio Colla (Tuscany, Italy). A very interesting offering on the ruins of an Italian settlement at Rione Terra in Pozzuoli, established in the 4th Century BC, which later became a Roman colony.

L'amphitheatre d'El-Jem (Thysdrus); an overview (TUNISIA): A detailed architectural study of the design and construction of one of the most well-preserved arenas in the Roman world. The text of this presentation is in French but the pictures are well worth examining in themselves.

With few exceptions maps on the WWW are in the developmental stage. The best bet on the internet for IU students looking for maps of the ancient world is Britannica Online and the first item below from the University of Calgary. The remainder of the listing below includes some of the most promising sites presently under development.
A Roman Atlas. From the incomparable Bill Thayer of the University of Kansas. This site is two things brought together: a collection of maps and a database. An open-ended, indexed and hyperlinked collection of maps of the Roman Empire, together with a collection of modern maps showing ancient placenames throughout any part of the world that was once part of the Roman Empire. Still under construction, but one of a kind.
