GENERAL

Thesaurus of Geographic Names Worldwide Thesaurus from the Getty Information Institute.

In Italy On Line A commercial site but outstanding. Broad coverage, sections on travel, books, bazaars, etc. particularly strong in providing coverage of diverse regions of Italy. Written by experts who love Italy and Rome. See especially Latium and Rome. A short wait required on most links due to art work, pictures and maps. Worth the wait.

Let's Roam Italy. A Cybertrip to the home of Julius Ceaser, and Leonardo DaVinci. Non profit general site directed towards students. Includes useful find an e-mail pal who can tell you all about the country and "la dolce vita" that is life in Italy. Very interesting.

Greece. Detailed maps of modern Greece from commercial site, Getting Around the Planet. Interesting.

Greek Mythology Map of ACHAEANS & TROJANS from the Genealogical Guide to Greek Mythology, by Carlos Parada. See also Trojan War and The Returns of the Achaean Leaders.

Virtual Rome. Commercial Site. Very useful. In Italian. But maps of Rome useful for English speakers.

Ptolemy: the Geography Claudius Ptolemy was an astronomer and mathematician of the 2c AD, and who must apparently have worked in Alexandria between 127 and 148 AD. This site is attempting a very admirable job of presenting Ptolemy's most famous works the Almagest, a 13-book textbook of astronomy; the Tetrabiblos, a compendium of astrology; and the Geography which appears on this website. Slow downloading but worth waiting.

PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTIONS

OXFORD UNIVERSITY: Faculty of Litterae Humaniores; Sub-Faculty of Ancient History. A variety of selected photo images are presented on this site, courtesy of Andrew Wickham , who retains copyright on all the images unless otherwise stated. An effort has also been made to select images that will open on the internet in a reasonable amount of time. But you may have to wait a minute or two for the image to appear.

Maps

With few exceptions maps on the WWW are in the developmental stage. The best bet on the internet for IU students looking for maps of the ancient world is Britannica Online and the first item below from the University of Calgary. The remainder of the listing below includes some of the most promising sites presently under development.

A Roman Atlas. From the incomparable Bill Thayer of the University of Kansas. This site is two things brought together: a collection of maps and a database. An open-ended, indexed and hyperlinked collection of maps of the Roman Empire, together with a collection of modern maps showing ancient placenames throughout any part of the world that was once part of the Roman Empire. Still under construction, but one of a kind.

Roman Empire at its Greatest Extent. An outstanding map of the Roman Empire. Thanks to Professor J. Vanderspoel, Department of Greek, Latin and Ancient History, University of Calgary.

Maps of the Roman Empire. From the New Law for Teaching and Learning, the Dalton School.

Peoples of Ancient Italy and The Carthaginian Empire. From World Cultures at Washington State University.

Classical Atlas Project. Headed by Dr. Richard Talbert, W. R. Kenan, Jr., Professor of History and Adjunct Professor of Classics, University of North Caroline-Chapel Hill.

Atlas: Ancient Near East, Classical Greece, Rome and Roman World, Late Antiquity, etc: A collection of maps and images on Greek and Roman history, sponsored by the Oregon State System of Higher Education, the UO New Media Center, and the UO Department of History. One of the best on the WWW.

Historical Maps of the Middle East : The Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection at The University of Texas at Austin.

The Virtual Tourist. Promising.
